Easy Dairy-free Gluten-free Cheese Puffs

dairy-free gluten-free cheese puffs

The last time I came up with a recipe that seemed too good to be true, it actually was. Good and true, that is. A luscious dark chocolate pudding made with coconut milk and maple syrup, ten minutes to prep and good to go days later. It sounded like a fantasy, but it turned out to be one of the big hits of the year. So last week, when I stumbled upon a recipe for a gluten-free cheese bread called Pão de Queijo, I thought I was dreaming again. The adorable little puffs reminded me of the heavenly rolls we used to buy every week at the farmers market over the summer. Made of tapioca flour (a.k.a. tapioca starch, cassava flour, or manioc flour), they were crusty on the outside, chewy and cheesy on the inside, and totally addictive. I pictured … [Read more...]

Caramel Apple Champagne Cocktails

Just in case you’re still hunting for Thanksgiving ideas, here’s a fun and festive way to kick off any feast. Don’t worry if you can’t find the caramel apple syrup (pumpkin spice and gingerbread syrups are delightful, too). You can substitute apple cider spiked with a little maple syrup.   These adorable caramel apple lollipops would make perfect cocktail stirrers. But this Farmgirl will be taking a break from all that to volunteer at a soup kitchen. Sometimes a little bit of reality is the best garnish.   Wishing you all a memorable, relaxing Thanksgiving! Everyone knows I don’t do turkey. I guess the idea of eating a big proud bird just has never appealed to me. When I was 10 years old, I decided my plate of gooey sweet potatoes, glimmering cranberries and perky green beans was just a whole lot more colorful and exciting. But to a lot of die-hards, a Thanksgiving meal without turkey is like a birthday without candles. And I’m not in the business of spoiling anyone’s fun. After all, a host’s job is to please. So whether your peeps are turkey-lovers or meatless mavens, here’s my holiday cooking advice: prepare a few traditional dishes, try a few new twists, and have delicious options for folks in both camps. Last year, even my carnivorous crowd went for … [Read more...]

The holiday games have begun. I know because I was in a store yesterday buying my kid fangs for Halloween, when some all-too-jolly Christmas music wafted into my ears. Not to be a cantankerous grouch or anything. Actually, I really do love this time of year — the refreshing chill in the air, the warm smells of cloves and casseroles, the cozy nights and twinkling lights. But the sound of jingle bells in October can only mean one thing…time to get ready for the Thanksgiving feast. Though I collect ideas and try new recipes all year long, now is the time my kitchen turns into a test lab. Anyone who walks in must take a bite of whatever is on the counter and give me their honest opinion. The rejects are tossed, the tastes are tallied, … [Read more...]
