My heartiest thanks and congratulations to all of you who shared your recipes in my Fall Cooking Contest! Entries came from all over the country and beyond. Each recipe made me think of your warm, cozy kitchens and the comforting flavors of fall. There was a delicious butternut squash baked with coconut and pineapple concentrate; an ambitious Chai Caramel Pie (spanning 3 pages!); a unique warm apple salsa; a casserole of apples, sweet potatoes, dried cranberries and pears; Sweet Potato Pear Soup; a mac ‘n cheese with bacon (kudos to my youngest entrant, a 15-year-old from New Brunswick, Canada); plus colorful salads, decadent cakes, stuffings, frittatas, and even a smoothie. And this Farmgirl couldn’t be happier to have J.T. in her corner. But while I’m thrilled tofu has made it into our national zeitgeist and plant-based diets are hip again, mass-produced soy nuggets and energy bars aren’t going to make us any healthier. Announcing the winner of our February Cooking Contest! This last contest, in which I asked you to share a recipe for someone you adore, drew the Farmgirl's biggest response ever. There were cupcakes, bread puddings, tarts, chocolate French toast, a very memorable asparagus pesto, dumplings, and even a three-course dinner. I loved hearing your stories and getting to taste your delicious cooking. Thank you to every one of you who entered the contest. It was a very close call! Last week, something happened on the way to my latte. I was reaching for my favorite white chocolate powder, which I always stir into my coffee, when I noticed the ingredients on the label. Well, sort of. Squinting to read the microscopic words (yes, I’m now that age), I realized I couldn’t pronounce any of them.
