Wild Mushroom-Leek Soup

Wild Mushroom Leek SoupBy now, even if you don’t have a teenager in the house, you’ve heard of the stratospherically successful movie “The Hunger Games.” I read the book over a weekend last summer, after my son’s school recommended it to both of us (we were supposed to read it together and discuss, but he decided to skip this bonding opportunity in favor of “South Park” reruns).

You might be wondering what the story of one girl’s fight for her integrity in a blood-thirsty dystopian society has to do with cooking.

Well, let’s just say when every theater nearby was sold out last weekend, I got inspired to cook up my own hunger games. My four hungry participants declared their various appetites at 5 pm, and then I, self-proclaimed domestic warrior, had to scramble to produce a suitably tasty, nutritious and crowd-appeasing meal in an hour or less.

I kept it simple and stuck to principle, utilizing an assortment of mushrooms from the farmers market in a classic but creamless French bisque. If I had really been on my game, I might have added some cooked wild rice or barley, soy bacon, fresh escarole, and a little curry powder or smoked paprika. But I was up against with some seriously famished challengers.

It may not have been an Olympian meal, but it was a decent opening ceremony. And, four empty bowls later, I was relieved to still be in the games.

I am pleased to announce a new collaboration with photographer and food blogger Kimberley Hasselbrink of The Year In Food! I stumbled upon her gorgeous blog while perusing another favorite source of eye candy, My Daily Addiction. Based in San Francisco, Kimberley charts the year through her inspiring cooking and luminous photography.
