Ever so slightly adapted from A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes by David Tanis.

I call this beautiful little dessert salad a life-saver. It comes from David Tanis, the former chef of Chez Panisse, author of One Good Dish (my new favorite cookbook), and columnist for The New York Times. One bite – juicy, crunchy, tart and sweet – made me feel just so….alive.

You see, last month, I got pneumonia. Have you ever had it? I hope not. I tell you not to elicit pity, but to explain why I’m happy just to be breathing right now.

There were a few days when I couldn’t get out of bed. I was forced to slam on my brakes. I even had to cancel a cooking class (deepest apologies to all of you who were signed up). There was nothing I could do but surrender.

Yet for the first time in my life, I finally gave myself a break. I reminded myself that life is hectic and overwhelming and it’s okay to take a beat sometimes. Oh, and sorry, I’m doing the best I can.

Slowly, I started getting my strength back. Eventually, I could manage one quick errand a day, then two. Just last week when I was able to start cooking again, I felt undead at last.

But what I crave now is a little simpler than before. It’s time I lost with the people I love most. And a few good, easy meals.

So instead of stressing out about the upcoming holidays and trying to plan the ultimate, most glorious and picture-perfect feast, I’ll be taking it slowly this year. This lovely fruit salad is as elegant as it is effortless to prepare. A splash of orange flower water makes it special enough for any festivity. And best of all, it’s just my speed.

Wishing you the happiest of holidays!

If you are trying to take it easy over the holidays, why not crowd-source your feast and have your guests bring their favorite dishes? It’s a recipe for success…and sanity!
