M Café’s Vegan Curried Lentil Soup

When the folks at M Café first asked me to try their five-day RESET Cleanse, I have to admit, I was a little skeptical. As you probably know, I don’t take well to diets or anything that involves giving up my favorite foods. Relinquish my Manchego? Surrender my sprouted cinnamon toast? Ditch dark chocolate? No thanks.

Besides, the word “cleanse” reminded me of my wannabe hippie days at Berkeley. But after getting sicker than I’d ever been last year, I knew I could use a reboot. Maybe I hadn’t been taking good care of my heath after all. Besides, I liked the idea of someone cooking for me for a change.

So I signed on, agreeing to a personal consultation with holistic nutritionist Elissa Goodman and five days of macrobiotic meals. The menu sounded enticing indeed. In addition to two juices each day, I would get to enjoy plenty of raw and cooked foods for lunch and dinner: fruits and veggies, sea vegetables, whole grains, and a choice of protein (salmon, tempeh or tofu). Dairy, gluten, sugar, and caffeine, believed to be inflammatory and imbalancing, were out of the picture.

M Cafe Baja Chopped Salad

My first day’s food arrived neatly packaged in a paper bag, numbered in order of consumption. But after drinking a lovely hot tea, followed by an intriguing spirulina, kale and chia seed beverage, I was still hungry. And I wasn’t supposed to eat my Baja Chopped Salad with Chipotle Lime Vinaigrette until lunchtime. Hmmm…maybe this wasn’t going to be as easy as I thought.

Thankfully, the meals turned out to be totally delicious. I especially loved the Coconut Curry “Miracle” Bowl on Day 3, a hearty bisque with cauliflower, broccoli, tofu and a rich, spicy coconut broth. In between meals, I snuck some nuts here and a latte there (sshhh!), but mostly I felt completely satisfied and nourished.

According to the RESET website, the program promised to boost my immune system, retune my metabolism, eliminate my sugar and carb cravings, and transform my mood – ultimately “exposing the most beautiful version” of me. And indeed, by the end of the week, I had more energy than ever, stopped jonesing for sweets, and was feeling virtuous…at least nutritionally.

I vowed to continue incorporating more juices and raw foods into my diet. Maybe I’d even renounce my morning latte (…or not). All in all, it was well worth the five-day recommitment to my health.

Just how much I fixed on the RESET Cleanse, I may never know. But it sure felt like a fresh start. And best of all, I learned to put myself back at the top of my list…even just for five days.
