Have you heard of the Monday Morning Cooking Club? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago, when one of the founders contacted me about teaching a cooking class together.

Her group of six lovely Jewish women had been getting together every week for years, sharing beloved recipes from their bubbies and ancestors while cooking, noshing, and kibitzing in the kitchen.

The Club decided to write a cookbook, rich with charming stories and sumptuous photos by Alan Benson. This week, I had the honor of hosting three of the authors for a sold-out class.

I cook with guests all the time, but this time was particularly special. You see, the women of Monday Morning Cooking Club live in Sydney, Australia. We had never met. But thanks to a few degrees of separation, a common heritage, and a little help from the Internet, we got to chop, stir, teach and laugh together right here in my kitchen.

The five dishes we demonstrated were full of flavor, history and heart. Like this cinnamon-infused apple cake, which had everyone at the first bite. It’s a simple but gorgeous confection, more apples than cake. And it couldn’t be easier to make. It’s my new favorite fall dessert, one I plan to serve for all the upcoming holidays.

I got to thinking about the many kitchens this cake must have seen over the years. The joyful occasions it has celebrated, the sadness it has soothed. And I was grateful the recipe found its way to my kitchen, thanks to my new Australian friends.

    Bonsoir Dana,
    I just made the cinnamon and apple pie and yes, it was very good and extremely easy. I didn’t have to go shopping, had everything at home and perfect for our family because of the non dairy ingredients.
