Winter Thanks…and a Giveaway

The chilliest weeks of the year call for daily doses of gratitude! This month, I’m especially thankful for…a bouquet of wildflowers and handmade cards on my birthday (Valentine’s day), SoCal sunshine, eager pink blooms on my magnolia tree, and lots of enthusiastic new students in the Farmgirl Kitchen. Speaking of gratitude, props to my new friends at La Tourangelle for sending me a bountiful care package of cooking oils. The 10-year-old artisan producer makes some of the purest nut and seed oils on the market. Their California-grown Avocado Oil was already a mainstay of my cooking – especially for salads, frying and searing. But after tasting their Roasted Walnut Oil on a salad and making Okonomiyaki with their Stir-Fry Oil, I’m … [Read more...]

January/February Giveaway

In the beginning of a new year, there’s always a lot of talk about diets, cleanses and detoxes. I’m guessing if you haven’t already vowed to try one, you know someone who has. But are they the key to losing weight and finding eternal youth? Is every celebrity in Tinseltown really fueled by gluten-free bread, cave protein, or green juice? I’m skeptical of any fad regime, especially those that make you cranky, weak, and food-obsessed. But one resolution solution that has my attention comes from my friends at M Café, the chain of tasty macrobiotic restaurants owned by Los Angeles’ legendary Chaya Restaurant family. Created by a certified holistic nutritionist together with M’s renowned chefs, it’s called the RESET Cleanse. According … [Read more...]

December Giveaway

Even though two major holidays are now behind us, the Farmgirl kitchen continues humming this month. Soups are simmering, casseroles bubbling and pies baking. There’s still plenty of good cooking to be enjoyed in 2013, so let the gatherings continue! Two books on the Farmgirl’s nightstand are crammed with inspiration. Dana Goodyear’s Anything That Moves explores the outer and inner bounds of what we consider “edible.” It just might entice you to try insects, organs, and other delicacies, or -- as Goodyear calls it -- dining on the ever-seductive “brink of calamity.” And Alice Waters’ The Art of Simple Food II will bring the legendary Berkeley restaurateur’s elegant, garden-based cooking right into your kitchen. The … [Read more...]
